Hot Summer Swing provides exactly what its title promises, sizzling grooves encompassing all the sounds of swing from bossa nova to big band. Classic artists like Paul Desmond, Doc Severinsen, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Charles Mingus and Lena Horne all add heat to this essential summer listening. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
Rhythms from South of the Border have been an important part of jazz since the 1940s. One thinks of the Cuban rhythms utilized when trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie first added the great conga player Chano Pozo to his big band, and of the 1960s when bossa-nova from Brazil became extremely popular. Included on this wide-ranging sampler are not only examples of rhythms from Cuba and Brazil but also from Mexico, Argentina (the tango) and Africa. Drawn from RCA's catalog, there is a selection apiece by the late Tito Puente's Orchestra, flugelhornist Clark Terry, trumpeter Doc Severinsen, Glenn Miller (The Rhumba Jumps), altoists Warren Hill (who utilizes catchy funk rhythms) and Antonio Hart, Charles Mingus (the passionate Tijuana Gift Shop), Dizzy Gillespie with singer Johnny Hartman (That Old Black Magic), Lionel Hampton, singer Abbe Lane (with Tito Puente), Artie Shaw, Lena Horne (New-Fangled Tango) and flugelhornist Hugh Masekela, plus two from altoist Paul Desmond. The concise performances, which cover a 55-year period (1939-94), are consistently exciting and feature top musicians converting rhythms and sounds from other countries into creative American jazz. Fun music!
