The Boys Choir of Harlem is joined by guests the James Williams Trio and Dianne Reeves for Christmas Carols and Sacred Songs, an engaging collection of gospel renditions of seasonal favorites including "O Holy Night," "Winter Wonderland," "White Christmas" and "Silent Night." ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
There has been a resurgence of interest in African-American Christmas music in recent years (spurred on this year by the film The Preacher's Wife I'm sure). There is poetic justice in this. Given the history of slavery in the United States, the idea of a king born in lowly circumstance under an oppressive government, an African-American Christmas makes sense. Anyway, teaming up Dianne Reeves with the popular Boys Choir of Harlem mixes more traditional songs of the seasons with complex rhythms and harmonies. Although there is a slightly jazzy feeling to Winter Wonderland, O Holy Night is reverential as it should be with Reeves sounding a lot like Marian Anderson in this 1991 rendition. This is music for the first time the tree lights are turned on and you sit there in awe as if a miracle just happened.
