Read About This Recording

Ever since he succeeded Wynton Marsalis as the trumpeter with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1982, Terence Blanchard has been one of the young greats of jazz. Born in New Orleans, Blanchard has a hard bop style as much influenced by Freddie Hubbard as by Miles Davis or Marsalis. He was with Blakey for four years, co-led a band with altoist Donald Harrison and then took some time off to really work on developing his embouchure and range. Since the early 1990s, Blanchard has led his own groups (which are usually filled with up-and-coming young players) and become an important writer for Hollywood soundtracks, particularly those directed by Spike Lee.

Let's Get Lost dates from 2001 and has the trumpeter exploring the music of Jimmy McHugh whose main work was in the 1930s. The trumpeter's arrangements greatly modernize the songs, which include the straightforward vocals of guests Diana Krall (Let's Get Lost), Jane Monheit, Dianne Reeves and Cassandra Wilson. In addition to the seven vocals, there are four instrumentals that allow Blanchard, tenor-saxophonist Bruce Winston and pianist Edward Simon opportunities to stretch out and update the classic McHugh standards.

This release serves as an excellent introduction to the exciting trumpet playing and writing of Terence Blanchard, one of the top jazzmen of the early 21st century.
