After serving as a sideman with James Williams, Chick Corea and a host of others, Wilson makes the most of his debut as a leader. Assembling a supporting cast of top-notch veterans, including pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Ben Riley, Wilson is a joy to listen to on any of his axes. Five of the nine songs are Wilson originals, with the leader's mesmerizing soprano sax on "A Joyful Noise," his spirited flute on the lovely "Trapaceria," and strong alto sax on his intense "Sisko" all meriting strong praise. Also worth mentioning is the exotic take of Billy Strayhorn's "Chelsea Bridge," which is quite a change from the usually slower dramatic arrangements in which Duke Ellington featured his soloists. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
One of the top saxophonists of his generation, Steve Wilson plays all of the reeds but is best known for his alto, flute and soprano solos. He gained some fame as a member of Chick Corea's Origin but has also worked with the Mingus Big Band, Out Of The Blue, Frank Foster, Don Byron, Jon Hendricks and Ellis Marsalis, among many others. Wilson began recording as a leader in the early 1990s and Generations, from 1998, was his fifth CD.
Matched with pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Ben Riley, Wilson performs five of his originals (including "A Joyful Noise"), a song apiece from Drummond and Miller, and two standards. Of the latter, he plays with melodic creativity on "Sweet and Lovely" and offers a fresh take on Billy Strayhorn's "Chelsea Bridge."
While the other musicians, particularly Miller, create strong solos, Steve Wilson is the main star throughout. His attractive tones, modern ideas and swinging post bop style make Generations an excellent example of his artistry.
