For this quartet date with pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Billy Higgins (trumpeter Freddie Hubbard sits in on two numbers), Turrentine is in top form on a variety of standards plus Tommy Turrentine's "Thomasville" and Rahsaan Roland Kirk's "Spirits up Above." A fine session. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
Thank the powers-that-be...thank record labels like MusicMasters for realizing how lacking the jazz world can be when someone like Stanley Turrentine is not recording. Originally released in 1992, Mr. T had been on a recording hiatus for around 3 years. More Than A Mood was a jolt from out of the blue at that point, reminding us all what good blues and soul oriented jazz was all about. Not surprisingly, it continues to be a wake up call to those who would be contenders. The fine solid swing of Turrentine's smooth tenor sax is heartily supported by equally legendary compatriots drummer Billy Higgins, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, and two vital tracks with brassman Freddie Hubbard. 5 Stars-DOWNBEAT
