This CD features a cross-section of soprano-great Bechet's '50s European recordings. A national hero in France during this time, although relatively unknown to the general public in the U.S., Bechet really dominates this set. The music ranges from his 1949 hit "Les Oignons," an early version of "Petite Fleur" and a passionate "Summertime" to romping jams on "Royal Garden Blues" and "When the Saints Go Marchin' In." A fine introduction to late-period Bechet, one of the true giants of jazz history. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
