The 1945-54 period was a rather unique time in pop music history. While the Big Band Era ended in 1946 and swing was considered passé, the pop charts became dominated by smooth ballad vocalists and novelties, many of which sound very dated today. The mainstream of jazz became bebop while some of the most exciting music of the time was rhythm & blues.
R&B was a natural outgrowth of swing, with riffs dominating, the honking saxophone becoming the main horn, and shouting singers being in the spotlight. While most of their recordings did not quite make the best seller's lists, the spirited music had its own audience and eventually led to rock and roll.
The four-CD set Rhythm 'n' Blues: Shouters, which is imported from Europe, contains exactly 100 recordings from the period, many of which are quite exhilarating and riotous. Among the bigger names represented are Roy Brown, Louis Jordan, Big Joe Turner, Wynonie Harris, Tiny Bradshaw, a very young B.B. King, Roy Milton, Amos Milburn and Johnny Otis, but quite often it is the obscure bands that take honors. There is no lack of energy to these very danceable recordings and this is music that is impossible not to enjoy.
Hot stuff!
