Marian McPartland, who recorded for Concord for over 20 years, recorded many different types of projects for the label. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, Concord came out with a large series of single-disc samplers in 1998, including this look at pianist McPartland's recordings. The dozen selections are taken from 12 different sets and include trio outings; tributes to Mary Lou Williams, Billy Strayhorn, and Benny Carter; a duet date with fellow pianist George Shearing; a guest appearance by Chris Potter; and a version of her "Silent Pool" in which McPartland is joined by a string orchestra. A fine overview. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
Marian McPartland, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday, is an apparently ageless marvel. She has become famous for hosting her Piano Jazz radio program since 1978 and still performs regularly in concerts and clubs. Her career started in the late 1930s in her native England and she played for the troops during World War II. Married to the classic Dixieland cornetist Jimmy McPartland in the mid-1940s, she moved with him to the United States in 1946. Although she sometimes played in his Dixieland groups, she was actually a more modern stylist. She gained attention for her work with her trio at the Hickory House during 1952-60 and was considered a harmonically adventurous and versatile pianist long before the Piano Jazz programs.
The Concord Jazz Heritage Series features McPartland on a sampling of her Concord recordings of the 1980s and 90s. Pianist George Shearing and tenor-saxophonist Chris Potter are among those making appearances. The repertoire ranges from Chick Corea's Windows and Billy Strayhorn's Blood Count to You and The Night and The Music and O Grande Amor.
Marian McPartland's impressive technical skills, versatility and youthful spirit are felt throughout this rewarding collection.
