Part of a slightly frivolous sampler series that features various jazz musicians and vocalists playing or singing the blues, Blue Trane: John Coltrane Plays the Blues has six selections taken from tenor saxophonist John Coltrane's Prestige recordings. Each of the numbers ("Slowtrane," "Traneing In," "Billie's Bounce," "The Real McCoy," "Big Paul" and "Sweet Sapphire Blues") comes from a different session, including one ("The Real McCoy") featuring Coltrane on alto with Gene Ammons. All of the music (which also has pianists Red Garland and Tommy Flanagan, guitarist Kenny Burrell and trumpeter Donald Byrd in the supporting cast) is excellent, but more serious collectors will want to acquire the complete sessions (which are readily available) instead. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
One of the more fun and informative ways to discover the jazz greats is to trace the music's evolution from album to album, checking out the music of the featured sidemen. Trumpeter Miles Davis had the masterful tenor-saxophonist John Coltrane in his band for several years.
John Coltrane's Blue Train was one of the saxophonist's greatest recordings of the 1950s. Teamed in a sextet with trumpeter Lee Morgan and trombonist Curtis Fuller, Coltrane introduces one of his finest compositions ("Moment's Notice"), takes a dazzling solo on "Blue Train" and shows throughout that he was rapidly becoming a powerful force. This reissue adds a second version of "Blue Train" and the alternate take of "Lazy Bird" to the original program. While Coltrane would play with Miles Davis through 1960, Blue Train made it obvious that he would not be a sideman for long.
