Review

The music on The Swingin's Mutual!, a dozen selections featuring the George Shearing Quintet includes six that have vocals by a young Nancy Wilson, and has been reissued on CD by Capitol with five additional tracks. This was one of Wilson's most jazz-oriented dates (even if she was never a jazz singer) and is highlighted by her vocals on "The Nearness of You" and "The Things We Did Last Summer" along with instrumental versions of "Oh! Look at Me Now," "Blue Lou" and "Lullaby of Birdland." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Read About This Recording

Before she switched to performing middle-of-the-road pop music, Nancy Wilson was a bright star in the jazz scene. Her most famous jazz recording was her 1962 collaboration with Cannonball Adderley. But, this set (mostly from June-July 1960) is easily its equal. Wilson, whose original inspiration was Dinah Washington, swings and sounds exuberant on nine selections (including a previously unreleased "Whisper Not") which are highlighted by "The Things We Did Last Summer," "Born to Be Blue" and "The Nearness of You."

In her Down Beat® review of the original release, Barbara Gardner enthused over Nancy Wilson's "pipes tailor-made for good, emotion-charged blasting and withering story telling. Her voice is crisp and clear as a bell. It can stand out over the instrumentation or it can melt into the group. Her diction and enunciation are perfect without sounding pedantic." In addition, her "backup group," the very popular George Shearing Quintet, performs their appealing brand of cool jazz not only behind Wilson's vocals but on eight instrumentals, four of which made their debut appearance on this highly recommended CD.
