Review

The title of this Blue Note set, Doin' Allright, fit perfectly at the time, for tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon was making the first of three successful comebacks. Largely neglected during the 1950s, Gordon's Blue Note recordings (of which this was the first) led to his rediscovery. The tenor is teamed with the young trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Horace Parlan, bassist George Tucker, and drummer Al Harewood for a strong set of music that is highlighted by "You've Changed" (which would become a permanent part of Gordon's repertoire), "Society Red" (a blues later used in the film {#Round Midnight}), and "It's You or No One." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Read About This Recording

Dexter Gordon was one of the most beloved of all jazz tenor-saxophonists. He had a giant and very friendly sound which perfectly fit his personality and life. He loved to quote favorite songs during his lengthy solos, enjoyed playing ballads (always knowing the lyrics to each song), and was difficult to defeat in tenor battles.

Gordon had a long career full of highpoints and comebacks. The first major tenor-saxophonist to emerge during the bebop era, he starred at jam sessions in Los Angeles in the late 1940s, often opposite Wardell Gray and Teddy Edwards. While off the scene for part of the 1950s, he made a big comeback in the early 1960s, recording several gems for the Blue Note label. Playing in prime form during a long period living in Europe, he returned to the United States in triumph in the mid-1970s and late in his career starred in the film Round Midnight.

Doin' Alright was the first of his Blue Notes and helped lead to Dexter's rediscovery. He heads an all-star quintet featuring the young and fiery trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Horace Parlan, bassist George Tucker and drummer Al Harewood. Highlights include "Society Red" (which 15 years later would be used in the Round Midnight film), a beautiful version of the ballad "You've Changed" and "It's You or No One."
