One thing's for sure, I'm not going to spend my life playing 'Stella by Starlight' in some wine bar. As good as his word, Courtney Pine reads us a different kind of bedtime story in this experimental album. There are haunting reminiscences of the aggressive, supernatural creativity of Coltrane in his style as it twists and turns through city streets with shouts of annunciation in Dah Blessing. Here also, from some subterranean doorway, the exuberance of funky jazz emanates as if the soul of Cannonball Adderley lives on in the person of Pine ('The 37th Chamber'). There are essences of Indian spices in other parts of the tour in the dirge of The Garden of Eden, while the new warriors of African-America offer chorus after chorus of vinyl influenced sampling on Creation Stepper. This is a pensive tale of urban trials and triumphs, whose moral is probably that the birth of beauty incorporates a good deal of pain.
