Review

Recorded in early 1960, Them Dirty Blues contains two classic jazz compositions: Nat Adderley's "Work Song" and Bobby Timmons' "Dat Dere," the sequel to "This Here." This was alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley's second quintet with brother Nat Adderley (cornet), and features Bobby Timmons on piano (who plays on four tracks and was replaced by Barry Harris on the remaining five), Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. Them Dirty Blues was originally released on Riverside until Adderley made the switch to Capitol where he brought several master tapes with him, including these sessions. The CD reissue contains an alternate version each of "Work Song" and "Dat Dere." ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide

Read About This Recording

Cannonball Adderley achieved great commercial success leading the quintet that he put together in 1959. With his brother Nat Adderley on cornet, pianist Bobby Timmons, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes, Adderley had a jazz hit with Timmons' This Here that defined the soul jazz movement. The follow-up record, from 1960, was Them Dirty Blues. The same personnel is heard from (other than Barry Harris splitting the piano duties with Timmons), and the music is both hard-driving bebop and very soulful.

There are quite a few classics and historic performances on Them Dirty Blues including important versions of Nat Adderley's Work Song, Jeannine, Sam Jones' Del Sasser and Timmons' Dis Dere (which would be given famous lyrics by Oscar Brown, Jr.). In addition to the original program, Work Song and Dat Dere are also heard in second alternate versions. The many powerful and highly expressive solos of Cannonball and Nat Adderley, along with the swinging rhythm section, makes Them Dirty Blues a must for serious jazz collections, and a great deal of fun.

Them Dirty Blues is one of Cannonball Adderley's true gems.
