One of the most popular jazz performers of the 1960s, altoist Cannonball Adderley had a soulful and hard-swinging style along with the ability to relate to an audience. His groups co-starred his brother, cornetist Nat Adderley, and performed music that was both explorative at times and accessible.

In 1964, the Adderley group, which was expanded to a sextet with the addition of Charles Lloyd on tenor and flute, performed eight songs from the hit musical Fiddler On The Roof. The music, which includes the title cut and Matchmaker, Matchmaker, was surprisingly adaptable to Cannonball's brand of jazz and the results are quite memorable. The group, which also includes pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes, clearly enjoyed themselves playing the fresh material.

The CD reissue of Fiddler On The Roof also has four bonus cuts which were singles cut a few months earlier of Little Boy With The Sad Eyes, Goodbye Charlie and a pair of Lloyd songs (Sweet Georgia Bright and Island Blues). Although those selections are not from Fiddler On The Roof, the style and melodies fit comfortably into this likable set.

This easily recommended set serves as an excellent introduction to the music of the great Cannonball Adderley.
