Review

Over the course of Benny Goodman's career, the stars often lined up right and he found himself working in tandem with someone every bit as talented as he, whether it was Bunny Berigan, Fletcher Henderson, Harry James, Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton or Teddy Wilson. For a brief period after most of the above had left his employ, Goodman hooked up with guitarist Charlie Christian and the jazz world was never the same. Christian played in the big band and his "Solo Flight" was one of the first big-band staples built around the then new electric guitar, but his best work came with a handful of finely wrought gems as a member of Goodman's sextet. Sharing solo space with Goodman and Hampton, Christian gave the electric guitar a place in the music on sides like "Flying Home," "Air Mail Special," "Stardust" and "AC-DC Current," where his instrument seems to be bursting with ideas and ceaseless invention. Along with sides by Eddie Lang and Django Reinhardt's Hot Club of France, these are the recordings that made jazz guitar history. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide

Read About This Recording

Includes title track; Not That Different; On The Verge; One Boy, One Girl; Sweet Miss Behavin'; Heart Full Of Rain; What If Jesus Comes Back Like That; The Time Machine; I Love Being Wrong; I Volunteer; Love Remains.

Collin Raye's agile tenor and flair for emotion-drenched romantic ballads made the singer's reputation in the early 90s. With his 1994 hit Little Rock, a riveting tale of recovery from alcoholism, Raye extended his reach and established a commitment to finding songs with unusual approaches to risky themes and social issues. Raye continues this conscientious exploration with the title track of I Think About You, a Don Schlitz/Steve Seskin composition in which a young father considers the future of his eight year old daughter as he surveys the often superficial, sometimes sordid roles of women in today's society. This well-rounded album also offers romantic ballads (Not That Different, One Boy, One Girl) and rocking dance tunes (Sweet Miss Behavin').

Extended Article

In the relatively short history of jazz, a few names tower above others for their innovation and raw talent. Names like Armstrong, Parker, Gillespie, Monk, Davis and Holiday. Add to this distinguished list the name of Benny Carter who, although he has not sold as many records or achieved the notoriety of other stars, nevertheless ranks among the creme de la creme of American musicians. His achievements as a composer and arranger, and his superb gifts as an alto saxophonist and trumpeter, make for a potent combination, as this wonderful video program shows. Taped at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC, this rare performance features a collection of standards played in Carter's inimitable style. Backed by Kenny Barron on piano, George Duvivier on bass, Ronnie Bedford on drums and Joe Kennedy Jr. on jazz violin, the 74-years-young Carter embodies both the jazz tradition and its future.
