The Benny Goodman Centennial is in full swing with the complete Yale recordings offered for the first time ever. Goodman, born in 1909, left thousands of hours of recordings to the Yale University Library. He collaborates with giants of the jazz age on 13 CDs featuring the most popular standards and jazz charts of all-time. Including a full CD of Benny with his original quartet including Teddy Wilson, Lionel Hampton and the legendary Gene Krupa.
The boxed set is jam-packed and includes complete tracks, performer and other details as well as photos and a biography. By the time of these recordings, made between 1954 and 1986, Benny Goodman was an elder statesman of jazz; while his reign as King of Swing® may have been behind him, he still had spirit and chops and could still lead great bands. The performances are drawn from Goodman's own personal collection of tapes, bequeathed to Yale by his estate. Mostly small-group recordings, these tracks feature Goodman in tandem with succeeding generations of jazz performers, ace players from bebop (Pepper Adams), cool (Zoot Sims), even the avant garde (Atilla Zoller and Henry Grimes).
If one wants timeless standards swung with old-school class, this is the place.

One of the greatest jazz clarinetists of all time (only Artie Shaw, Buddy DeFranco and Eddie Daniels compete), Benny Goodman was the most influential and famous. Although he had made his recording debut in 1926, he was a virtual unknown until he put together his first big band in 1934. It was a complete surprise when his big band's success the following year practically caused a riot at Los Angeles' Palomar Ballroom, starting the Swing Era. Goodman was an unlikely matinee idol, but he became such a major force that he is still well known today, 22 years after his death.
In his last years, Goodman arranged to donate to Yale University his extensive collection of privately recorded performances. The dozen volumes, which total 13 CDs, had been previously unreleased as a complete set.
While Benny Goodman was a dominant force during 1935-45, he was always a brilliant player, even when his swing music was overshadowed by more modern styles. Goodman is heard in a wide variety of settings in this package, ranging from big band recreations to heated combos. Among the many impressive sidemen are cornetists Ruby Braff and Bobby Hackett, trumpeters Jack Sheldon, Joe Newman, Charlie Shavers and Doc Cheatham, trombonist Bill Harris, tenors Paul Quinichette, Zoot Sims and Flip Philips, vibraphonist Red Norvo, pianist Mel Powell and even a young Herbie Hancock. In addition, there is a full CD that is a reunion of the Benny Goodman Quartet with Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa in the early 1960s.
Dating from 1936-86, The Complete Yale Archives of Benny Goodman is a must for swing lovers.
