The trumpet, and its predecessor the cornet, have been significant instruments in jazz ever since its beginning. Used in the early days to state the melody and to lead ensembles in New Orleans jazz bands, the trumpet/cornet became a major solo instrument in the 1920s with the rise of Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke.
The four-CD imported set Battle of Trumpets features most of the top jazz trumpeters of 1925-65 at their best. From Dixieland to swing, bebop to cool, nearly all of the major names are here including Armstrong, Beiderbecke, Red Allen, Jabbo Smith (outstanding on Jazz Battle), Bill Coleman, Bunny Berigan, Bobby Hackett, Muggsy Spanier, Hot Lips Page, Charlie Shavers, Sidney DeParis, Wild Bill Davison, Harry James, Buck Clayton and Red Nichols. And that is only the first disc!
The other CDs include Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown and many others before the set concludes with Freddie Hubbard and Wynton Marsalis. So many of these musicians are instantly recognizable, having developed their own sound on the difficult horn. But that is why they are considered giants.
Battle of Trumpets is an excellent overview of the trumpet's place in jazz history and serves as a fine introduction to quite a few talented brass players.
