In another experiment, producer Creed Taylor teams O'Day with the alternately Latin and bop-grounded quartet of vibraphonist Cal Tjader -- and he gets some amazing performances from this team. O'Day sounds as if she is delighted with Tjader's polished Afro-Cuban grooves, gliding easily over the rhythms, toying with the tunes, transforming even a tune so locked into its trite time as "Mr. Sandman" into a stimulating excursion. Indeed, O'Day's freewheeling phrasing becomes downright sexy on "That's Your Red Wagon" and Dave Frishberg's delicious parody of a spoiled honeybunch, "Peel Me a Grape." Also, thanks to Taylor's obsession with good engineering and tasteful applications of reverb, O'Day's voice sounds much fuller and more attractive in his productions than on her Norman Granz-produced albums. ~ Richard S. Here is a fine example of why labels like Verve should continue to peruse their musical vaults. This reissue of Time For 2 hasn't been available for years. Originally released on vinyl in 1962 it is even more of a jazz awakening after meticulous re-mastering. Featuring the smooth voice of Miss Anita O'Day, this recording shows her at a turning point in her career. Neither neglecting nor belaboring her legendary past as vocalist for Gene Krupa and Stan Kenton, O'Day had shaken off the mannerisms and nuances of those who influenced her stylings and instead displayed her own vibrant jazz-oriented interpretive strengths. Full of cool sophistication and sexy individuality, pairing her with Cal Tjader's Latin-oriented group was a brainstorm. At the top of his game in 1962, Tjader's jazz-based playing lends a subtle support that ties this entire effort together. Whether playing straight ahead or bringing in his signature Latin percussive sounds, the blend is a full and swinging rediscovery.

"Miss O'Day with her cool timbre, relaxed rhythmic conception, and graceful way of bending notes... is backed here by Tjader's group which provides both Latin and straight swinging accompaniments." —DownBeat ****
