Biography

  • Born 1961

A fine bop soloist on the valve trombone, Mike Fahn is always ready to jam or to add his horn to any swinging situation. His father was a drummer who had played with Lionel Hampton and young Mike started out as a drummer too. He soon switched to trumpet and baritone horn before becoming a valve trombonist when he was 12. Within a couple years his family moved to the Orange County area near Los Angeles. In 1979 he started sitting in with pianist Frank Strazzeri and began freelancing. He became good friends with John Patitucci, eventually marrying Patittucci's sister. Fahn performed with Shorty Rogers, Bill Holman and Don Menza and had opportunities to sit in with Freddie Hubbard, Chet Baker and Wynton Marsalis. He toured with Maynard Ferguson's Big Bop Nouveau Band in the late 1980's and eventually moved back to New York. Mike Fahn has recorded with Ferguson, Bob Cooper, Dick Berk, Kim Richmond, Matt Catingub and Frank Strazzeri among others along with leading a date of his own for Cexton. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
